As we ring in the new year, Pacific, MO, is bracing for its first major winter storm of 2025. A powerful polar vortex is sweeping through the region, bringing heavy snow, sleet, and icy conditions. While winter storms can be challenging, they also provide an opportunity to show the strength and resilience of our Pacific community. Let’s dive into what’s happening, how to stay safe, and how to prepare for the days ahead.
What to Expect 🌨️
Snow and Ice Accumulation:
The Meramec region is under a Winter Storm Warning until 6:00 AM on Monday, January 6, 2025. Forecasters predict 4–12 inches of snow and up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation, making travel conditions hazardous.
Frigid Temperatures:
With daytime highs in the low 20s and nighttime lows dipping below zero, frostbite and hypothermia are risks for anyone outdoors for extended periods.
Road Closures and Difficult Travel:
Major roadways in and around Pacific, including First Street and Jefferson Street, may experience closures. If you must travel, keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and check Missouri road conditions at traveler.modot.org.
How to Prepare 🛠️
Protect Your Home: Ensure windows and doors are properly sealed to keep heat in. Allow faucets to drip to prevent frozen pipes. Stock up on firewood or heating fuel if needed.
Stay Safe on the Roads: Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary. If you must travel, pack an emergency kit with blankets, flashlights, water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.
Stock Up on Essentials: Have a three-day supply of non-perishable food and water. Check your flashlights and batteries in case of power outages.
Look Out for Neighbors: Check in on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance during the storm.
Community Resilience in Action 💪
In true Pacific fashion, our community has already started coming together to face the storm. Residents and city officials have been hard at work preparing roads, distributing resources, and checking in on one another. The Pacific Emergency Management Agency is monitoring conditions and will provide updates as the storm progresses.
