Today, we pause to honor the men and women who have served our nation — and to remember how deeply military service is woven into Pacific’s history. From the Civil War to the Cold War, this little town has stood as both witness and participant in America’s long story of courage and sacrifice.

At PVA, we believe that service isn’t just something to remember — it’s something to live by. Whether it’s through volunteering, lending a hand to a neighbor, or teaching our kids about what sacrifice really means, this community continues to carry that same spirit forward.

🕰 Pacific’s Place in Military History

Few small towns in Missouri carry such rich military roots. In October 1864, Pacific found itself at the edge of one of the final Civil War engagements near St. Louis — the Battle of Pacific. Confederate troops under General Sterling Price’s command briefly occupied the town before clashing with Union forces just east of here. It was considered part of the last line of defense protecting the gateway to St. Louis.

Confederate General William Cabell's troops attacked Pacific to destroy the railroad and facilities, but were met by Union forces from St. Louis, and the battle became a key defense point preventing further Confederate advances on St. Louis.

Almost a century later, during the Cold War, Pacific again played a quiet but important role in U.S. defense. The U.S. Air Force operated a Nike Hercules missile site just south of town from 1960 to 1968 — part of a nationwide network built to protect major cities from air attack.

These reminders — from artillery positions in the 1860s to missile silos in the 1960s — tell us something powerful about the people of Pacific: we’ve always been a community ready to serve, protect, and persevere.

🙏 Honoring Those Who Serve

To every veteran — from World War II heroes to modern-day service members — we say thank you. Your commitment to duty and courage under pressure make our freedoms possible.

If you see a veteran today, take a moment to shake their hand, share a smile, or simply say: “Thank you for your service.”

Gratitude doesn’t just belong on one day a year. It lives in how we treat each other, how we teach our children, and how we care for our community.
